The NCC Operations Optimization AI Scheduler project received the Customer Satisfaction Award at LG Awards — LG Group’s annual recognition of projects that delivered real value to customers across all affiliates.
Receiving an LG Award is no small feat given the group-wide scope of the competition. What made this one especially meaningful was that the recognition wasn’t just for building a technology — it was for deploying it in an actual industrial environment and achieving measurable results.
The project set out to optimize production scheduling at LG Chem’s Daesan NCC (naphtha cracking) plant using AI, starting in April 2022. We initially thought even a 0.1% improvement would be significant. In the end, we achieved a performance gain of over 3% compared to the baseline, translating to more than 10 billion KRW in additional annual margin — more than 30 times the original target.
Technically, we applied a multi-agent reinforcement learning-based scheduler directly to the plant. The research was later presented at AAMAS 2024 and ICML 2025. RL has attracted a lot of attention since AlphaGo, but cases where it has been deployed in real industrial settings and driven revenue improvements are still rare. The whole team takes genuine pride in that.

LG Awards는 LG 전 계열사를 통틀어 수여되는 상인 만큼 받기가 쉽지 않습니다. 이번 수상이 더 의미있었던 건, 단순히 기술을 만들어 냈기 때문이 아니라 그 기술이 실제 산업 현장에서 쓰이고 성과를 냈기 때문이었습니다.
LG Chem 대산 NCC(납사 분해 공정) 공장의 생산 스케줄링을 AI로 최적화하는 프로젝트로, 2022년 4월부터 시작했습니다. 처음에는 0.1% 개선만 해도 의미 있다고 생각했는데, 결과적으로 기존 대비 3% 이상의 성능 향상과 연간 약 100억 원 이상의 마진 증가를 이뤄냈습니다. 목표치의 30배가 넘는 성과였습니다.
기술적으로는 멀티-에이전트 강화학습 기반 스케줄러를 현장에 적용한 것인데, 이 연구가 AAMAS 2024, ICML 2025 등의 학회에도 발표됐습니다. 강화학습이 AlphaGo 이후 주목받아 왔지만 실제 산업 현장에 적용해 수익 개선까지 이어진 사례는 아직도 드문 만큼, 팀 전체가 그 점에 자부심을 갖고 있습니다.
